More Than A Riding Lesson: Inside a Barn Buddies Session
What happens when you combine horses, creativity, movement, and a little bit of play?
You get Barn Buddies—one of the joyful ways we help children learn, connect, and grow at Justin’s Place.
Our Barn Buddies lessons are designed to make learning with horses fun and engaging while building real skills along the way. Each week, children practice riding skills like posture, halting, and steering, while also learning about the horses they are caring for.
And we don't believe learning has to feel like work!
A lesson might begin with rainbow or flower breathing to help riders settle into their bodies before they ride. Another week, children might practice gently picking up and setting down their reins through a high-five game. They learn to use their body and their reins to ask the horse to halt, then stop at different grooming tools around the arena to name them and use them on their horse.
As the weeks progress, riders practice turning, steering, and remembering the names of their grooming tools. But instead of simply being asked to memorize information, they might turn their horse toward a particular brush, cross through the arena, or stop for a high five. Learning becomes something they experience rather than something they are simply told.
Even our games have a purpose.
A roll-the-dice game helps riders review halting and steering. A “three-point direction” game gets them moving through the arena while remembering their grooming tools. And sometimes the lesson gets delightfully silly—like decorating a horse's tail with hair clips or collecting grooming tools scattered around the arena to “clean” a dirty horse.
For us, these aren't just cute activities. They create opportunities for children to practice following directions, remembering information, coordinating their bodies, making choices, communicating with a horse, and building confidence—all while having a genuinely good time.
That's the magic of Barn Buddies.
A child may think they're playing a game with a horse. We see a child discovering that they can learn something new, try something challenging, communicate clearly, care for another living being, and celebrate their own success.
